TSB Releases Update on Fatal Saturna Island Crash

Six people who died in B.C. float plane crash couldn't escape stuck doors

VANCOUVER, B.C. - If the float plane that crashed and sank off Saturna Island, B.C., had been equipped with doors that ejected, some of the six people killed may have survived.

The recommendation has been made by the Transportation Safety Board at least twice in the past, but no changes have been made.   Read more...

CAMPBELL RIVER - The crash of a DeHavilland Beaver Sunday on Saturna Island is reviving memories for several Campbell River families who lost loved ones in a float plane tragedy nearly five years ago off of Quadra Island. 

Five men were killed when a floatplane bound for a logging camp crashed shortly after taking off from the Campbell River spit in February of 2005. Only one mans remains were ever found from the crash leaving grieving families searching for answers.   Read more...

A plane with a hotwired instrument panel and electrical cords held with masking tape. Another repaired with Canadian Tire parts. An Air Canada plane refuelling with the engines running and taking off with ice on the wings.

Those horror stories were presented to a House of Commons hearing today as the aviation inspectors union condemned Canada's new aviation oversight system.   Read more...

Question Period: After "The Fifth Estate"

Following CBC's The Fifth Estate examination of air safety and security in Canada in "Riding on Risk", NDP Transport Critic Dennis Bevington once again raises the issue during Question Period in the House of Commons on September 28th.

Mr. Bevington first raised this issue during Question Period on April 22nd, following the April 21st Aviation Safety Round Table.  He raised the issue again in September 15th.

VANCOUVER, B.C. — Though he has climbed aboard small planes thousands of times, forestry worker Bob Pomponio always feared he was sitting on a flying gas tank that might one day cause trouble.

"Fire is the nature of the beast," Pomponio sighed matter-of-factly as he recalled the worst-case scenario that erupted around him last summer.

History of SMS Legislation

The Act to Amend the Aeronautics Act and Make Consequential Amendments to Other Acts, meant to enable Safety Management Systems (SMS) in the aviation industry, was first introduced on September 28, 2005 as Bill C-62 by the Liberal government then in power.   On November 15th, SMS was formalized for the business aviation sector through amendments to the Civil Aviation Regulations, Part VI, Subpart 604.
