How You Can Help
The Petition
"TO INITIATE A COMMISSION OF INQUIRY, headed by a Superior Court judge, to conduct a judicial review into Canada’s state of national aviation safety and related regulatory infrastructure to be followed by further reviews at defined intervals."
Please download the petition and follow the instructions. Please do everything you can to help spread the word and gather as many signatures as possible.
Whistleblower Project
Have you faced repercussions after making a safety-related complaint? Have you found that you were failed by Transport Canada and the Ministry of Labour? You could be a pilot, an AME, a dispatcher, a government employee, or in any other aviation related occupation.
There are few jobs in which a judgement error can so easily become fatal. There are few occupations where a workplace death commonly results in remarks like “he died doing what he loved”. There are few occupations in which that love for the job can be so badly exploited. There are few occupations for which a single employee (often low-paid and/or under-skilled) holds so much responsibility.
The aim of this project will be to publicize stories related to whistleblowing in the Canadian aviation industry. Assistance may be provided to connect you with whistleblower groups that can help. Anonymity will be protected if requested.
Our first "true" example is coming soon.
Tragedy & Loss Project
With the April 28th 2010 National Day of Mourning in view, in memory of workers killed and injured on the job (World Day for Safety and Health at Work), SafeSkies aims to launch a set of pages that will commemorate those who have been hurt or killed in aviation accidents in Canada.
The aim of this project will be: to publicize stories related to the heartache caused by Canadian aviation accidents; to bring victims, survivors and families together; and to push for a National Compassionate Assistance Program.
Please see Remembering Damien Hancock for an example of what these pages will look like.
Special Issues
In the September 15th, 2009 issue of the SafeSkies Newsletter, we included a Special Issue - Lighthouses to be Unmanned.
Comments have been positive and the Federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Gail Shea, has now ordered a review of the Coast Guards plans. As a result of this partial success and to encourage the industry to speak out on such matters, we plan to begin a "Special Issues" section on the website. We request, and welcome, contributions and ideas for issues to be addressed from our readers, anonymously if preferred. See here for the first example, Lighthouses to be Unmanned.
Other
As recognition for our organization has grown, there have been more requests for our presence at various functions across the country. We need help to enable us to respond to these requests. Assistance with travel costs, including donation of AirMiles, etc., would be appreciated.
Please contact Kirsten if you can help in any of these areas.![]()
