OTTAWA - Since Transport Canada first started implementing aviation Safety Management Systems (SMS), UCTE has been voicing grave concern that passenger safety in this country is at risk.  This week, Marc GrĂ©goire Assistant Deputy Minister, Safety and Security met with UCTE National President, Christine Collins and National Vice-President Kerry Williams to announce that Transport Canada was ready to listen. GrĂ©goire acknowledged that more dialogue was needed and that UCTE's support was important.

While Transport Canada has tried to convince the public that SMS provided an additional layer of safety, UCTE has been very vocal that inspection and oversight was being sacrificed.  UCTE is not alone its concerns over SMS, with other unions, organizations and safety experts sharing those concerns.

UCTE will be meeting with Transport officials in the coming weeks.
